Brisbane's southside runs from the hilly suburbs of Mount Gravatt, Holland Park and Carindale down to the bayside flats of Wynnum, Manly and Capalaba. It is renovation country: post-war homes on sloping blocks being extended, decked and landscaped.

Access first

Many southside blocks have a metre or less beside the house, and the slope often means a retaining wall before anything else. The R13 PRO narrows to 750 mm and the R06 goes through a doorway; both are common choices here.

Ground

Red and brown clay over sandstone on the hills, softer alluvial soil along Bulimba Creek, and sand near the bay. Sandstone floaters turn up in footings around Mount Gravatt and Holland Park.

Retaining walls, under-house excavation for raised Queenslanders, drainage, pool digs and paving prep. A tilt bucket earns its keep on the slopes.
