From the older brick suburbs of Chermside and Aspley to the new estates of North Lakes, Griffin and Mango Hill, Brisbane's northside is a mix of heavy clay, weathered sandstone and, along the Pine River and Redcliffe peninsula, sandy flats.

What you dig into

The clay is the story. It swells in the wet season and shrinks in a dry winter, which is why so many northside houses have cracked paths and why footings are engineered deep. A 1.5 to 2 tonne excavator with a toothed bucket handles it; a ripper helps in a dry July.

Retaining walls on sloping blocks, pool excavation on 400 to 600 square metre lots, soakage and drainage after summer storms, and the landscaping that follows every new build in the Moreton Bay estates.

Machines that suit

The R15 and R18 PRO cover most suburban work, with the R18's extra dig depth useful for pools. An RS06 skid steer moves the soil, gravel and turf. Delivery from Currumbin Waters is about 90 minutes via the Gateway Motorway.
