Digging Brisbane Clay: What a Mini Excavator Owner Needs to Know
Most of Brisbane sits on reactive clay that swells in the wet and shrinks in the dry. How that changes footings, trenching, timing and the machine you buy.
Anyone who has watched a Brisbane driveway crack over a dry winter has seen reactive clay at work. Most of the city, from the northside through the western suburbs and out to Ipswich, sits on clay that takes on water in the summer wet and gives it up in winter. The soil moves, and everything built on it has to allow for that.
What it means for footings
Engineers classify Brisbane sites by how much the soil moves, and the classification sets the footing depth. Highly reactive sites need deeper, stiffer footings, which means more digging. A 1.5 to 2 tonne excavator is the practical minimum for footings in clay; the R18 PRO's 2,420 mm dig depth covers even the deep bored piers some sites call for.
Dig footings and pour them in the same week. An open footing trench in clay collects water in a storm and dries into a cracked, over-excavated mess in the sun.
Trenching
Clay holds a vertical face far better than sand, which makes trenching for drainage, plumbing and cable straightforward. The catch is the spoil: wet clay is heavy, sticks to the bucket and will not compact back into the trench. Stockpile it on a tarp or a hard surface and backfill with the specified material rather than the clay you took out.
Wet season versus dry
From December to March the clay is soft, sticky and slow. Buckets clog, tracks slide and a trench fills with water overnight. From May to October it is firm and, by August, hard enough that a ripper is the first attachment you reach for. The best months are April, May, September and October, when the ground is firm but not yet baked.
Buckets and attachments
- A toothed digging bucket for footings and trenches; teeth bite where a smooth edge skates.
- A ripper for the dry months, cracking the surface before you dig.
- A tilt bucket for retaining wall batters and drainage falls.
- A wide mud bucket is less useful here than in sand; keep one for backfilling and grading.
Sandstone floaters
Brisbane clay often sits on weathered sandstone, and boulders of it turn up in footings around Mount Gravatt, Holland Park, Bardon and The Gap. Most can be levered out with a toothed bucket or a ripper; the solid stuff needs a breaker.
Machine choice
